description

The entrance to the wind hole leads through an eight-meter-deep collapse doline with a 15-meter diameter, which leads steeply downwards and breaks off overhanging abruptly. In the shaft cave there is a cave dome with a diameter of 20 meters and a height of 35 meters. The cave walls are extensively covered with sinter . The cave is very wet from dripping water.

history

The cave has been known since around 1900 and was examined in 1928 by the Nuremberg speleologist Richard Erl . In addition to various bones, remains of human skeletons were found. Based on other finds, it is assumed that the cave has been repeatedly visited at least from the Hallstatt period to the present day. Around 1930 the topographical mapping (cave plan) was carried out by Richard Spöcker. The owner of the cave is the Natural History Society of Nuremberg .

Access

The cave is accessible all year round. Due to the protection of the caves and the bats that hibernate there , it is not accessible from October to April. In general, the cave was only by very experienced cavers with appropriate equipment traveled to. Fatal accidents occur time and again in this cave. To protect against unsuspecting entry, the sinkhole was fenced in and an information board was installed.

The best way to get to the cave is via hiking trails from Großmeinfeld.
