Winfried Geier (born August 23, 1960 ) is a former German soccer player and coach .

Career

The defender began his football career in the youth team of SC Adelsdorf . After the C-youth he moved to ASV Herzogenaurach , which was then playing in the highest German youth class, the youth Bavarian league. During his time in Herzogenaurach, Geier played 16 games in the national youth team. At adidas , he successfully completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk.

In 1979 he moved to FC Schalke 04 and played 53 Bundesliga games and 33 second division games for the Royal Blues . He scored 5 goals during that time. He also played 3 games for the German U-21 national soccer team in 1980 .

In 1984 he was reamateurised after suffering a torn Achilles tendon and moved to 1. FC 01 Bamberg . Together with Klaus Täuber from the club and Dietmar Beiersdorfer , the players were not employed by the Bamberg club itself, but by an advertising agency, which then loaned the players to the club. In 1986 he moved to the Bayern league promoted 1. FC Amberg , who was trained by the former Dortmund national player Aki Schmidt .

In 1987 Werner Lorant , with whom Winfried Geier had played for six months at Schalke, brought the defender to 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 for two years , where he was able to avoid relegation after the club had been commuting between the Bayern League and the State League for years .

After his time in Schweinfurt, Geier moved to the Bamberg area and played two years for SV Hallstadt and three years for SV Memmelsdorf in the Landesliga Nord. From 1994 to 2000 the right-footed player played at SC 08 Bamberg . At the age of almost 40, Geier surprisingly switched to FSV Großenseebach as a player-coach and looked after the team with a one-year break until 2006.
