Wintarnaht is a pagan metal band founded in 1997 near Stuttgart . Until 2012 the group was known under the English band name Winternight . The band performs most of their lyrics in the Old High German language.

history

Wintarnaht was founded in 1997 by Grimwald (guitar and vocals). In the spring of 1998 the rhythm guitar was occupied with Muzgash and shortly afterwards a suitable drummer was found in Goatruler. In 1999 the lineup was completed with Thule on bass. The style adopted at the time should tend towards Falkenbach , Isengard , early Darkthrone and Helheim and deal with pagan themes. According to Grimwald, the former band name Winternight comes from a Falkenbach song of the same name and the pagan festival of sacrifice winter night (see Vetrnóttablót ). Shortly before the planned recordings for the first demo, guitarist Muzgash left the band. In 2001, the remaining three-person line-up gave a single concert in Plüderhausen , after which Grimwald broke up the band due to poor progress.

In 2004, Winternight was revived by Grimwald (guitars, vocals) and Goatruler (drums). At first it was planned to record the old, already existing songs and publish them as a demo before trying to do something new. In 2007 the demo Rache… was finally released as a hand-numbered CD-R (limited to 96 copies) and as a split- tape with Trollzorn. The demo included songs from 1997 to 2004. The CD version got a bonus song called The Throne of Ice . This was a new rehearsal room recording from 2007.

In 2010 the first album Pestilenz was released on CD. Was published pestilence on the record label Obscure Abhorrence Productions pressed and in an edition of 1000 units. Since there were several metal bands under the name Winternight, Grimwald decided in 2012 to rename the band to the synonymous Old High German Wintarnaht. In addition, it was decided to keep all lyrics in the old high German language in order to set themselves apart from other bands. Wintarnaht's texts are specially written Old High German texts, not historically transmitted.

In 2013 the Old High German titled album Tôdhên Uoþal was released on CD. Tôdhên Uoþal loosely translated means “dying home” or “dying nature”. This album was released again in a first edition of 500 copies via Obscure Abhorrence Productions. In 2014, befriended guest musicians (string instruments) were trained and Wintarnaht has since performed in this now full live line-up. In June 2014 the band also played on the Funkenflug (Speckjaga) in Austria.

In April 2015, Wintarnaht released the download EP þiu Sunnawentî (The Solstice). This EP was available for free download from the band's band camp page. A self-produced amateur video for the title song þiu Sunnawentî was also published on the band's YouTube channel. At the end of 2015, Wintarnaht signed a contract with the Austrian music label Talheim Records . A short time later, in March 2016, the compilation Germinôd - Archaische Verse (Germinôd = Runenbeschwerung, Galder ) was published as a cassette on Scar Days productions and as a download. The cassette is limited to 121 pieces and is hand-numbered. In the same year Grimwald, under the pseudonym Syderyth, became one of the two founders of Dauþuz .

In January 2017, Grimwald split from his longtime drummer due to musical and ideological differences. Since then, Grimwald has continued to lead the band as the only member of the band. Due to this, all further live performances were canceled. On March 11, 2017, Talheim Records released the third album In Âgez (In Vergessenheit) as a 10-page digipak. In that year Grimwald co-founded the new live band Isgalder .

The compilation Germinôd - Archaische Verse , previously released on cassette, was reissued on CD in January 2019. This is limited to 222 pieces and hand-numbered. The track list on the CD is different from that on the cassette. Various songs were exchanged for new, unreleased songs. The CD was only released by the company itself.

In March 2019, a split CD in digipak was released again via Talheim Records with the Styrian black metal band Varulv . The publication underworld mysteries deals thematically with the so-called Schratzellöchern better than earth stables known. It is the first Wintarnaht release on which Grimwald took over all the instruments and the vocals alone. Due to the subject matter and to make it easier to understand, the three Wintarnaht songs are sung in German, not as usual in Old High German.

style

music

Wintarnaht describe their music as "Archaic Black Metal".

The musical style of the demo revenge ... can according to various reviews as urtöniges work of early Pagan Metals are designated with heroic male choirs, acoustic guitars, mouth harp ; the whole thing mixed with influences from primitive Black Metal .

Wintarnaht, Speckjaga 2014

This demo was compared with Isengard and Storm . The first professional release, Pestilenz , had a much stronger propensity for traditional Norwegian second wave Black Metal. The choirs were minimized, the speed increased. The previously used acoustic guitars were only used marginally. A first song was already available on this CD, which was sung in the Old High German language. This song is called Siohhi , which translates as "infirmity". A Germanic lyre was used for the first time in the song Fahler Frost-Untergang . The special thing about this was that the band played one of the two Germanic lyres like an electric guitar over a distortion.

On the following album Tôdhên Uoþal , the style was consistently developed. Except for one of the lyrics, everything was sung in Old High German. Musically, the band once again mixed Nordic Black Metal with Pagan Metal and acoustic instruments. The vocals on this CD are very varied. Mainly used the singer black metal screams , to normal, slightly heroic vocals and death metal - growls . One song was played with acoustic guitars and one with several lyres, and the jaw harp can also be heard again. The Germanic lyres used here are built by the band themselves. On this album, the band used a keyboard for the first time to underline the music. On the compilation cassette Germinôd - Archaische Verse Wintarnaht published the EP þiu Sunnawenti, which was previously only available as a download . This EP was provided with an intro and an outro and forms the "night" page. The “Tag” page contains rare, unreleased acoustic pieces.

The third album In Âgez continues the style of the previous release Tôdhên Uoþal , but is more varied musically and vocally .

Old high German texts

According to the singer and songwriter Grimwald, an attempt should be made to create an early and non-standardized form of Old High German that still contains slight approaches from the West Germanic languages . So far, all Old High German texts have been printed in the booklets, but not translated until the publication Germinôd - Archaic Verse . Since 2017 there have been translations and explanations of the language style on the band's website, which has now been deleted. This information can now be found in Grimwald's band forum Archaic-Oath .

"Niowiht scaþo fliogan ubar þin grunt
ioana sin lant þer scaþo
ana aro fart ain spel eban · lango alt
tôdhên gaist · sioh sêl
bistumbalôn lant · Tôdhên Uoþal ..."

- Wintarnaht : Tôdhên Uoþal

The texts deal with topics about nature, antitheist paganism or natural religion , history and misanthropy . In general, the dark aspect of all topics used predominates. The band claims to be completely apolitical and that they strictly reject politics in metal, especially in their own music.
