We regret to inform you is an American documentary from 1998. The documentary, which deals with the fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War and their bereaved families, was nominated for the 1999 Academy Award .
prehistory
The visual artist Barbara Sonneborn (* 1944) from Chicago met her future husband Jeff Gurvitz at the age of 14. On her 24th birthday in 1968, Sonneborn received news from the US Army that Jeff Gurvitz had been killed in the Vietnam War. 20 years after Jeff's death, Sonneborn decided to go to Vietnam and make a film.

The film shows Sonneborn and the Vietnamese soldier widow Xuan Ngoc Evans on a trip through Vietnam. Evan's first husband also died in the Vietnam War. In the 1970s she married an American and moved to the United States. Evans translated for Sonneborn and told her own story. The destination of Sonneborn and Evans' journey is Khe Sanh , the place where Jeff Gurvitz died. Sonneborn shows interviews with American and Vietnamese women who lost their husbands in the Vietnam War.
