Wiratex building, 1964
The architects' collective under the direction of Peter Senf, 1961

The Wiratex building (also: Wiratex house ) is a building on the boulevard Unter den Linden 62–64 in the Berlin district of Mitte . It dates from the time of the GDR and was built between 1962 and 1964. The building stands as part of the architectural ensembles Dorotheenstadt under monument protection .

History and conception

Before the Second World War, the location of the Wiratex building housed the first Berlin aquarium , the Hotel Minerva and the Hiller restaurant . These buildings were massively damaged in World War II and demolished after the war. Through the VEB Berlin project, the Wiratex building was planned according to plans by an architects' collective under the direction of Peter Senf. On November 30, 1964, the building was handed over to the Exportgesellschaft für Wirk und Raumtextilien mbH . The building adheres to the from the Empire acquired eaves height of 22 meters. It is a reinforced concrete skeleton assembly construction with window frame panels and aluminum window frames. There are olive-green and blue-green glass mosaics on the parapets . The projecting gable to Schadowstraße was provided with concrete ornament stones.

Since March 2010 the building has been the seat of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation as Forum Willy Brandt Berlin . There the foundation is showing a permanent exhibition on Willy Brandt and the political developments in the 20th century under the title “Willy Brandt - Politikerleben” .
