The whirlwind - left children and youth projects eV - emerged in 1994 from the AGJG eV, a youth organization close to the PDS .

After the association shifted its focus from classical political work to youth projects in the tradition of the FDJ , it became a recognized sponsor of youth welfare within the meaning of the Child and Youth Welfare Development Act . As such, he operated an extensive network of youth facilities in Thuringia such as meeting points, classic youth clubs and “open spaces”. Another aspect of the association's activities was classic youth association work, extracurricular youth education and the organization of holiday camps and camp trips. Well-known bases of the Wirbelwind eV were u. a. in Gera , Hermsdorf , Erfurt , Weida , Sömmerda , St. Gangloff , Suhl and Heiligenstadt . As a member of the lobby organization Kinderinteressen eV, Wirbelwind u. a. also member of the state youth ring of Thuringia and of the parity welfare association .

The first holiday camp trips were organized by the Thuringian AGJG as early as 1991. In February 1992 the association was founded as the “Working Group of Young Comrades in Thuringia” and entry in the register of associations. At the same time, the “Working Group Young Comrades in and at the PDS” continued to exist in Thuringia until 1999. Since 1994 at the latest they have been looking for a new name in order to make themselves recognizable as a non-party association, until the general assembly at the beginning of 1996 finally decided on the name "Whirlwind - left children and youth projects" after much back and forth.

Starting in 1994, around 30 children from Krasnaja Gora ( Russia , Brjansk Oblast near Chernobyl , Zone 3) were invited to Germany to take part in a holiday camp at the KiEZ holiday park Feuerkuppe in Straussberg near Sondershausen .

Since 1996, starting with Erfurt, the association has gradually opened facilities for open youth work throughout Thuringia.

Due to errors in the settlement of SAM funding, the association was made extensive repayment claims from authorities in 2003. Since he was unable to cushion this despite extensive rescue donations from the left spectrum, the association was liquidated at the end of 2004 and the facilities were closed.
