history

The place was first mentioned in 1266. A pilgrimage chapel dedicated to St. Gangloff (or Gangolf ) gave the place its name. The place used to have three mills on the Fischbach, two of which still have buildings. From the valley of the Fischbach, in which the oldest houses in St. Gangloff are located, the place has expanded in the course of time to the north and west.

The Schlossberg property is located about 1.5 kilometers west of the village at the upper exit of the Fischbach . It is said to have been the location of a castle complex.

St. Gangloff belonged on the one hand to the Wettin district office of Eisenberg and on the other hand to the Wettin office of Roda , which were under the sovereignty of various Ernestine duchies due to several divisions in the course of their existence . In 1826 both parts came from the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg to the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg . Since then they have belonged to the western district and from 1876 to the administrative district of Roda . In 1904/10 the Altroda and Neuroda shares were combined into one place. From 1920 the place belonged to the Free State of Thuringia.

Some old half-timbered houses in the "Old Village" are worth seeing, one of them with an original clay oven, the village church of St. Gangloff with the old cemetery and the forest cemetery.

About two kilometers southwest of the village, just a few meters from the federal highway 9 , there is a stone cross . It was originally hidden in the forest and was set up in its current location in 1964 after it was found.
