Culture and sights
In the local area there is a low castle in the valley next to the road. The interior, which is protected by a moat, is called the “manor house” - that is, a manor house. The remainder of the building that can still be seen today is said to go back to the renovation of the von Hardenberg family after the major fire of 1736. The Hardenbergs owned the facility for a long time and the poet Novalis spent several childhood years here. A Heinrich von Schlöben was mentioned among the Lobdeburgers .
A stone cross stands on the country road northeast of Schlöben in the direction of Schöngleina . According to tradition, a butcher is said to have died here.
To the west of the Podelsatz reservoir on the sloping slope is the desert village of Ladnitz . The associated moated castle was excavated during the construction of the water reservoir. High medieval vessels were found. This property was mentioned in a document from 1216. In the 14th century the castle lost importance as a noble residence and became a Vorwerk until the 15th century.
Above the Scheermühle near Podelsatz lies a well-preserved rampart that uses the natural conditions. There are further trenches and hills in the complex. It could have been a refuge. The Ladenitz desert was also nearby.
An early Iron Age hoard was found on the southern edge of the Wöllmisse on a mountain spur above the village of Rabis. Bronze and iron objects were found there.
A hilltop castle was located about one kilometer south of the village of Gröben on the western flank of the forest mountain.

economy
Bioenergiedorf Schlöben eG, founded in 2009, aims to generate heat and power from renewable energy sources (biomass). The biogas plant consists of several silos, a combined heat and power plant in Mennewitz and two combined heat and power plants in Schlöben itself, which take over the base load supply. If more energy is required, a wood chip heating system can be switched on. The energy source in Mennewitz is piped via Zöttnitz to Schlöben. The local heating network is distributed from here and supplies 86 customers (as of 02/2012).
