Wire (Engl. "Wire", "line" ) is a British rock band that in October 1976 in London with punk rock began to also developed but rapidly beyond this framework and the different genres, including post-punk and New Wave is attributed.
history
Founding members were the guitarists Colin Newman (* 1954) and Bruce Gilbert (* 1946), the bassist Graham Lewis (* 1953) and the drummer Robert Gray alias Robert Gotobed (* 1951). The guitarist George Gill left the band before the recording of Mannequin from the debut album Pink Flag .
Her debut album Pink Flag (1977) is considered a masterpiece of the punk genre. Among other things, it ranks 69th in the selection of the 100 best debut albums by Rolling Stone magazine . Further, Pink Flag in the list 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die added.
The first three studio albums of Wire, by Pink Flag still Chairs Missing (1978) and 154 (1979), were reviewed enthusiastically by the press and exerted great influence on subsequent rock bands such as My Bloody Valentine , Blur , Black Flag , Bad Brains and REM from .
After the third album, Wire did not record any more records and gave no more concerts. The members concentrated on other projects such as Dome, Cupol, Duet Emmo or Colin Newman's solo albums. The group only got back together in 1985.
In 1991 drummer Robert Gray (Gotobed) left the band to work as an organic farmer, whereupon Wire changed its name to Wir . Since 2000 the founding members have been playing under the name Wire again . In 2004 Bruce Gilbert left the band and Wire played as a trio from then on. In 2012 they released the album Change Becomes Us together with Matthew Simms , the pieces of which are based on musical ideas from the early phase of the band.
