Wisdom (German wisdom ) was a Hungarian power metal band that was founded in 2001 in Budapest . The name stands for the intention of the music group to deal with the subject of wisdom in their artistic work. In terms of content, each song is therefore closely based on a wise saying by well-known poets and thinkers. In the external presentation, the omnipresent figure of an old, wise man, the Wiseman , on covers, posters, etc. underscores the musician's program.
history
Early days
Already at the turn of the millennium the bassist Máté Molnár and the guitarist Gábor Kovács were thinking of founding a heavy / power metal band. The first meeting with the participation of Máté Molnár, Gábor Kovács and Nachladal István (Nahi) took place in October 2001 in a pub on Moszkva Square. They arranged to meet to record some cover versions together, including Gamma Rays Man on a Mission , Judas Priests Night Crawler and Helloweens Eagle Fly Free . They also set the band's goal: in this musical genre, “you can't create anything new, but you can do something good”. Since then, it has also been the band's Ars Poetics.
Since Legendary, Gábor Kovács' other band, was not particularly active, their guitarist Zsolt Galambos was also able to participate in Wisdom. So the first line-up of the band came about after one or two years: the singer Istvan Nachladal (Nahi) - who was then a member of Morpheus - the drummer Balázs Hornyák from Dynasty and the guitarist Zsolt Galambos.
The name "Wisdom"
The idea for the name of the band comes from a film called Wisdom (German title: Wisdom - Dynamit und Kühles Blut ) from 1986, in which the actor Emilio Estevez played the role of the main actor John Wisdom.
The first concerts
The main composer of the band was Gábor Kovács. He introduced Wisdom's first song Fate at the first rehearsal. The second song was the mid-tempo piece King of Death . A year after the band was founded, the first demo was presented to the other well-known Hungarian bands. Kalapács decided to take Wisdom with them as a support act on their autumn tour. The live set also included Aces High by Iron Maiden and I'm Alive by Helloween.
The demo also ensured an appearance on Iron Maiden's Hungary tour, which, under the motto Giv Me Ed ... ´Til I'm Dead, led to a small stadium with 15,000 seats in Hungary. Wisdopm's biggest performance to date.
Wisdom EP, the birth of Wiseman and video clips
Further invitations followed the concert with Iron Maiden. One had the opportunity to act as a support act for foreign bands such as Saxon , UDO and Doro . The German-Scandinavian band Dionysus took part in the UDO / Doro tour, and their director Ronny Milianovicz Wisdom was very popular. He planned a joint project with the singer from Wisdom and became the manager of the band. After the first EP the pressure got bigger and bigger, but so far only seven songs were finished. The finished songs were then recorded in the studio. The plan was that the version with 4 songs would be released in Hungary and the other with 7 songs would be sent to foreign publishers and concert organizers as a promotion.
The bassist Máté Molnár wanted to build a world around the band's name from the beginning, such as B. the story of Eddie (Iron Maiden) or Vic ( Megadeth ). The draftsman Gyula Havancsák (Hjules) drew the first draft for the Wiseman, who became the main character of the band. The most important points of life of his story were always told in the title songs of the albums.
Even before the EP was released, a video clip was made for the song entitled Strain of Madness , which was filmed in the family grave of the famous champagne maker Törley in February 2004 . The CD also contains this clip and other extras.
In 2004 the Wisdom EP was released with 4 songs. Each song was created with a wisdom from famous scientists, thinkers or artists who briefly sums up the plot of the songs. The CD was released in Hungary together with an edition of Metal Hammer (local name: HammerWorld). At this time Balázs Hornyák separated from the band. He was replaced by Csaba Czébely. The CD presentation took place in front of the band Europe .
Keep Wiseman Alive
The first independent Wisdom concert was held on November 19, 2005 in the capital Budapest. The show was named " Keep Wiseman Alive ", which should point out that the more people come to the concert, the sooner Wiseman and thus the band can be kept alive. With the show taking place in their hometown, the band members had more time to set up grander visual effects and use pyrotechnics for their performance. The concert was actually only planned for a one-time performance. Over time, however, it turned into the most important event for the band and was held almost annually. In 2006 Wiseman himself took the stage. But it wasn't until seven years later, in 2013, that it appeared again for the premiere of the third album.
The first LP, Eurovision, separation
2006 was the year of touring and preparing for the first album. The place of Csaba Czébely was taken by the drummer Péter Kern. The mastering on the LP took place in the Finnvox studio . In November 2006, the first album (supported by Hammer Records) called Words of Wisdom was released . Shortly thereafter, the Japanese publisher Soundholic brought the LP to the Asian market, making Wisdom the first band whose CD was released in Asia. The album was so successful that the band was nominated as the best band in Hungary for the Eurovision 2007, but lost in the televoting against Magdi Rúzsa . Then the video clip called Wisdom was filmed in the Kiscelli Museum, where Wiseman himself appeared.
In spring 2007 they went on tour. In the summer of this year the band played in front of Heaven and Hell as well as at the most important festivals in Hungary such as Sziget . The greater recognition was followed by higher tension between the members of the band. Istvan Nachladal (Nahi) left Wisdom, Zoltan Kiss (Iron Maidnem, Age of Nemesis ... etc.) helped out the band. In December 2007 the EP At the Gates came out.
Return, Judas
A performance in front of Judas Priest with the new drummer Balázs Ágota (who followed Péter Kern) followed in 2008. After that, Wisdom was not heard from, although there was a lot of work on the second LP in the background. In 2010 the new singer sang the whole tour with a mask in front of his face. Here his voice, not the person, was important, which also attracted a lot of attention in the music industry in Hungary. The name of the hitherto unknown singer Gábor Nagy (NG) was only revealed with the album. This was published in 2011 under the title Judas .
In addition to Nagy, guest vocalists include Mats Levén ( Therion , Yngwie Malmsteen , At Vance ), who embodied Judas on the album .
In autumn, a new video clip for the lyrical song entitled Heaven and Hell was born , which was filmed in the picturesque park of the castle of the old Hungarian noble family Festetics in Dég . At that time the band celebrated their 10th anniversary with a tour called X. Wise Years in 10 big cities in Hungary, the last concert of which was the V. Keep Wiseman Alive.
International opportunities, tour
At the beginning of 2012 contracts were signed with the Austrian concert agency Rock the Nation and with the publisher NoiseArt Records . This opened up new international paths and opportunities for the band. Zsolt could not live up to the higher expectations, so Máté Bodor became the new guitarist. He was previously a student at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London. The album has now been released worldwide. Then the band went on a big tour together with Eluveite in support of Sabaton . The tour lasted two months in Western Europe, then two weeks in Great Britain, then in spring 2013 one month in Eastern Europe. The tour totaled 58 concerts in 38 countries.
Marching for Liberty
On September 27, 2013, the third studio album, Marching for Liberty, was released . It was released internationally by Noise Art Records and in Hungary by Hammer Records. The title song features the voice of Fabio Lione (Rhapsody, Vision Divine, Mamelot, Angra). After the CD release, Wisdom went on a major European tour with Powerwolf . At their concert in Budapest under the motto Keep Wiseman Alive VII , Powerwolf appeared as a special guest in front of Wisdom.
Rise of the Wise, resolution
After supporting Sabaton on their Heroes Tour in February 2016, their fourth studio album, Rise of the Wise , was released on February 26th . Like its predecessor, it was released internationally by Noise Art Records, while in Hungary it was released by Nail Records. After the release, Wisdom played a few more concerts in Europe in 2016 before it became quiet again for the band.
On April 1, 2018, Wisdom posted a statement on Facebook and the official website, announcing that the band had split up. After the last studio album, the band members came to the conclusion that they needed a change in several things and that this would not work if you were constantly on tour or in the studio. Furthermore, the bad health of the singer, Gabor Nagy, was mentioned and also that the success of Mate Molnar's new band, Beast in Black , is increasing much faster than initially expected. Nonetheless, Wisdom plan to release their fifth studio album at some point.
