Science Olympiad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Science Olympiad aims to encourage young people and awaken scientific talents and creativity. Nine Olympiads organize workshops, camps, exams and competitions for around 4,000 talents in science and technology every year. The Science Olympiad aims to enable encounters between young people and scientists. The participants are mainly young researchers who invest time and knowledge in the national program voluntarily and free of charge.

The Olympiads are offered to children and young people in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein in the following subjects: biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, mathematics, philosophy, physics, robotics and economics.

history

The forerunner of the Science Olympiad in Switzerland is the coordination office for the Olympiads in chemistry, mathematics and computer science. This was created in 1993 by Claire von Wyss. In 2004, the now five associations to organize the Olympics in chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics and physics founded the Association of Swiss Science Olympics (VSWO). The presidium of the association was taken over by Daniel Wegmann, the management by Claudia Appenzeller. In 2011, the Association for the Organization of the Philosophy Olympiad was accepted as an associated member and four years later as a full member. In 2015, the Association for the Organization of the Geography Olympiad was accepted as an associate and a year later as a full member. In 2019, WRO Switzerland was accepted as a full member, which organizes the Robotics Olympiad in Switzerland. The greatest successes of the association include the organization of the International Biology Olympiad 2013 in Bern , the International Physics Olympiad 2016 in Zurich (together with the SwissPhO association and the Principality of Liechtenstein) and the support for the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad 2017 in Zurich. In 2018, corporate identity and corporate design were adapted to the needs of the target groups. The association has called itself the Science Olympiad ever since.

Board and office

The board of the Science Olympiad consists of one representative from each regular member association. The board of directors is headed by a president. The association has an office that is located at the University of Bern .

Member associations

The Science Olympiad consists of eight members, the associations for the organization of the Swiss Olympics in biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, mathematics, philosophy, physics and robotics as well as a cooperation with YES in the field of economics.

biology

The Biology Olympiad was founded in 1999 by Thomas Braschler and Daniel Wegmann. It has grown since then and is the largest Swiss Science Olympiad with over a thousand participants.

chemistry

In 1987 the chemistry teacher Maurice Cosandey put together the first team to take part in the International Chemistry Olympiad . This makes the Swiss Chemistry Olympiad the oldest Swiss Science Olympiad.

geography

In 2014 geography teachers founded the SwissGeOlymp association to organize the Swiss Geography Olympiad. In 2016, a team from Switzerland took part in the International Geography Olympiad for the first time .

Computer science

The first Computer Science Olympiad (SOI) took place in 1992. Since then, the team from Switzerland has won at least one medal at the International Computer Science Olympiad almost every year .

mathematics

At the initiative of middle school student Beatrice Wollenmann, a team from Switzerland took part in the International Mathematical Olympiad for the first time in 1991 . The imosuisse association has been organizing the Swiss Mathematics Olympiad since 2004 .

philosophy

At the initiative of philosophy teacher Jonas Pfister, a team from Switzerland took part in the International Philosophy Olympiad for the first time in 2006 . The Swiss Philosophy Olympiad is organized by the SwissPhilO association.

physics

On the initiative of Giorgio Häusermann and thanks to the support of the coordination office, the first team from Switzerland took part in the International Physics Olympiad in 1995 . The Swiss Physics Olympiad is organized by the SwissPhO association.

robotics

The WRO Switzerland association conducts the preliminary rounds for the world finals of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Switzerland .

economy

The Business Olympiad is a joint project of the Science Olympiad in collaboration with the YES Young Enterprise Switzerland organization with the aim of promoting young people in business, finance and entrepreneurship.
