The Withdean Stadium is a football stadium with athletics track in the English city of Brighton , United Kingdom . It has a capacity of 8,850 spectators and served as the home ground of the Brighton & Hove Albion football club from 1999 to 2011.
history
The Withdean Stadium in Brighton, an English town on the English Channel coast in East Sussex , was built in 1936 and opened that same year. At first it was exclusively from Brighton & Hove Athletics Club, an athletics club from Brighton and Hove , that is, from the city of Brighton and its neighboring town of Hove . Until 2011 it was also used by the football club Brighton & Hove Albion as a venue for home games. However, the club, which currently plays in the Premier League , only moved to Withdean Stadium in 1999, as the stadium previously used by the club, the Goldstone Ground , was sold and demolished in 1997. Withdean Stadium is one of the most unpopular stadiums in the UK , according to a 2004 survey by the Observer .
Brighton & Hove Albion had been planning to build a new stadium for a long time; after the old 1901 Goldstone Ground was sold. Construction began in late 2008 and cost around £ 100 million . The new home of the Seagulls , which bears the name Falmer Stadium (official sponsor name: American Express Community Stadium ), was completed in mid-2011, so that Brighton & Hove Albion moved into the new building for the 2011/12 season.
