history

Pier Towers

Like many other seaside resorts, Withernsea also has a wide promenade. Halfway there is the Pier Towers , the entrance to a 364 m long pier . It was built in 1877 and cost £ 12,000. Over time, it suffered damage from continuous wear and tear from the surf and from several ship collisions in 1880, 1888 and 1903. In the 1930s, the end of the bridge was dismantled and the rest of the bridge was restored.

In the middle of the 19th century the Hull and Holderness Railway was built, which connected Kingston upon Hull with Withernsea (via Keyingham and Patrington ). It was mainly used for vacation trips by Victorian working class families and strengthened the economic situation of the city. The railway line was shut down in 1964; today there are no more remains of the route to be seen.

lighthouse

The landmark of the city is the 38 m high lighthouse. Although it is no longer in operation, it now houses a museum about actress Kay Kendall, who was born in Withernsea in 1926 .

As in most British holiday areas, the number of overnight stays has fallen steadily over the past few decades due to the favorable Mediterranean competition. However, there is still a significant number of tourists between June and August.

The city's economy is focused on retail and, in the summer, selling souvenirs and beach items. The gambling halls also generate the highest turnover during this period. However, the city's largest employer is the local secondary school. She specializes in technology and the humanities.

There is a golf course and a leisure center consisting of a sports hall and an indoor swimming pool. Various pubs can be found all over the city.

Withernsea has its own hospital as well as a Humberside Police station .
