In 1179 he fell away from his liege lord , Duke Heinrich the Lion , but was captured by his people in the Second Battle of Haler Feld near Osnabrück on August 1, 1179. Around 1184 Wittekind shared the possessions of his family with his uncle Wittekind II von Schwalenberg and was the first of his house to call himself "Count von Waldeck". With him began the centuries-long disputes between Waldeck and the Archbishops of Cologne , which played a decisive role in the history of the County of Waldeck until the 17th century. Wittekind moved his residence to Waldeck Castle , as this was outside the legal area of the Archbishops of Cologne and that of the Archbishops of Mainz .

In 1185 he and his brothers helped found the Marienfeld monastery .

Wittekind won the city and free court of Korbach . In 1189 he sold the bailiwick of Paderborn with the Busdorf monastery and the Abdinghof monastery , probably to finance his participation in the Third Crusade ; thus an essential support of his rule was lost. He then went to the Third Crusade with the army of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa and was killed on the way, by 1190 at the latest. His brother Heinrich followed him as the ruling count.
