Wolfgang Brünner (born April 29, 1928 - August 11, 2020 in Sondershausen ) was a German football goalkeeper. In the 1950s and 1960s he played for Motor Jena in the GDR league , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

For the 1951/52 season, the 23-year-old goalkeeper Wolfgang Brünner from the company sports association (BSG) Metall Apolda , where he last played in the third-class regional class Thuringia , joined BSG Motor Jena in the second-class GDR league . There he was initially the second goalkeeper behind Rolf Jahnand in his first season in Jena he made eight appearances in 22 point games. The BSG Motor rose after this season in the GDR league, in which Jahn and Brünner were tied with 14 appearances in 26 games. The Jena had to relegate to the GDR league again after one season, in which Brno was only twice in point games in 1953/54. In 1954/55 BSG Motor, which had been converted into the Motor Jena Sports Club during the season, got a new goalkeeper in Manfred Ziegert. He and Brno were called up alternately, with Brno remaining slightly behind with 13 to 15 league games. In 1956, football matches in the GDR were switched to the calendar year rhythm. This season, the SC Motor again made it to the top division. With the 18-year-old Harald Fritzsche , Jena had a new goalkeeper again in 1956, but he was only called up in five point games in the starting eleven. Brno was used regularly from the first match day and thus became a regular goalkeeper. In the league season of 1957 Brünner lost his regular place again, because coach Hans Warg had chosen Fritzsche as the regular goalkeeper. Brno was only used sporadically in nine of the 26 point games. Also in the following league seasons Brünner couldn't get past Harald Fritzsche. Until he left SC Motor Jena in 1962, Brno was only used in 27 games within a further four seasons with a total of 117 point games. Even when he won the Jena Cup in 1960, he was only a substitute goalkeeper. In the summer of 1962, at the age of 34, Brno joined BSG Motor Zeiss Jena , where he ended his football career in the district league .

Brno died in August 2020 at the age of 92.
