Wolfgang Burkhardtsmaier (* 1913 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ; † July 3, 1982 in Backnang ) was a German electrical engineer.

Professional activity

After graduating from high school, Burkhardtsmaier studied electrical engineering and technical mathematics at the TH Stuttgart in 1932 . He then worked as a scientific assistant from 1936 to 1939 at the TH Berlin , where he also worked in 1941 with the dissertation The Influence of Operating Voltage on the Risk of Lightning Strikes in Overhead Lines: Its determination through model tests to become a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

As early as 1939, Burkhardtsmaier joined the Telefunken transmitter laboratory in Berlin, headed by Wilhelm Kummerer (1890–1951) and later headed by Werner Buschbeck (1900–1974) - now in Ulm . In 1949 Burkhardtsmaier took over the management of the laboratory for high-frequency heat generators. In the next few years, the laboratories for VHF, TV and shortwave transmitters followed one another. In 1950, under his leadership, a 10 kW VHF tube transmitter was developed, which belonged to the first generation of VHF transmitters.

Finally, in 1961, Burkhardtsmaier was appointed head of development for the transmitter department from Telefunken in Berlin, a position he held until 1974. The development of TV, shortwave and high-power transmitters since 1954 as well as the beginning of the development of pulse duration modulation (PDM) in 1973 - numerous publications by Burkhardtmaier and others testify to this. a. with Buschbeck. In 1975 he was appointed chief scientific officer at Telefunken and as such took over the technical and scientific planning department in the division development in Ulm, a position which he held until his retirement in 1977. Then he dealt with the history of transmitter technology at AEG -Telefunken

His book on antenna and system technology was published posthumously at AEG. Burkhardtsmaier describes transmitting antennas for long, long, medium and short wave, but also VHF and TV transmitting antennas in an understandable way. Burkhardtsmaier also deals with the transport of energy in transmitting antennas, provides receiving antennas for long and shortwave and gives an exemplary insight into the system technology of transmitting radio stations and receiving antenna systems - as there are: large radio station Nauen (1906-1945), transmitter Königs Wusterhausen (1915– 1945), DCF77 Mainflingen (from 1951), Zeesen transmitter (1929–1945), Radio Vaticana (from 1937), Radio Malta (from 1974), Wertachtal shortwave transmitter (from 1972), Norddeich Radio (from 1906 and 1929), radio station Elmshorn (from 1942), receiving station Utlandshörn (from 1930), Geltow (1919–1926), receiving station Beelitz (1926–1945) and Ersdorf (from 1980).
