Wolfgang E. Ernst (born May 31, 1951 in Minden , Westphalia) is a German physicist . He is a professor at the Technical University of Graz , Austria .

life and work

Ernst studied from 1969 Physics and Mathematics at the University of Hannover with Vordiplomen in mathematics (1971) and Physics (1971), was 1972-73 as a fellow of the Scholarship Foundation of the German People at Imperial College London and graduated in 1975 his physics degree at the University of Hanover from. With funding from the Studienstiftung, he also obtained his doctorate at the TU Hannover in 1977 . He then worked from 1978 to 1979 as a post-doctoral student with Frank K. Tittel at Rice University in Houston , Texas . From 1979 to 1985 he was a college assistant at the Free University of Berlin held, where he joined in 1983 in the subject Experimental Physics habilitated . From 1985 to 1989 he used a Heisenberg grant to continue to head the laser laboratory for molecular spectroscopy at the Free University of Berlin and to spend a research year with Richard N. Zare at Stanford University . In early 1990, he accepted a tenured full professorship of physics at Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA. In 1997 he was also appointed Professor of Chemistry there.

During the 12 years at Pennsylvania State University , Ernst Research spent sabbaticals with Udo Buck at the Max Planck Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen (1993) and with Giacinto Scoles at Princeton University (1996).

In 2001 Ernst accepted a position at Graz University of Technology , where he has headed the Institute for Experimental Physics since 2003 and from 2010 to 2017 also held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Geodesy.

In 2013 and 2014 he was President of the Austrian Physical Society , in 2012 and 2015 he served as Vice President.

His group studies the structure and dynamics of molecules as well as clusters and solid surfaces both experimentally and theoretically . Interactions between electron and nuclear motions are of particular interest. Molecular beam experiments, laser spectroscopy in the frequency and time domains, photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic scattering are used. At the same time, quantum chemical calculations are carried out.
