Wolfgang Eichwede
Wolfgang Eichwede (born June 12, 1942 in Friedrichshafen ) is a German historian and founding director of the Research Center for Eastern Europe at the University of Bremen .
biography
Eichwede studied history , politics , philosophy and Slavic studies in Tübingen , Heidelberg and Berlin .
Since 1974 he has been Professor of Politics and Contemporary History of Eastern Europe at the University of Bremen . He retired in 2007. His main research interests are the social movements and culture of Eastern Europe (especially the Soviet Union and Russia) after 1953, as well as Soviet and Russian-German relations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
With the establishment of the Research Center for Eastern Europe in 1982, he took over the management of the institute, which he held until 2008. His successor is the historian Susanne Schattenberg . Under his direction, one of the largest samizdat archives in the world was created at the Eastern Europe Research Center . This was made possible in particular by Eichwede's close personal relationship with dissidents in Eastern Europe. He is closely associated with the human rights organization Memorial . To this day, he is committed to the social, civil rights and freedom movements in Eastern Europe. The endeavor to create friendship with Russia, said Eichwede, must also show Putin's power politics "its limits - limits that result from international law and the rights of the smaller, not so powerful states".
Eichwede has been very successful in returning looted art goods in both directions (Germany - Eastern Europe). He played a mediating role in the reconstruction of the Amber Room in Katharinenpark.
