Wolfgang Emmerich (born March 30, 1941 in Chemnitz ) is a German literary and cultural scientist . In 1988 he founded the Institute for Cultural Studies in Germany (IfkuD) at the University of Bremen and headed it until 2005. His research focus is the literary and cultural history of the 20th century, in particular the literature of exile, GDR literature and the transformation phase since 1989 / 90 as well as the authors Paul Celan , Heiner Müller and Gottfried Benn .

life and work

In 1958 Emmerich moved from his hometown of Chemnitz (renamed "Karl-Marx-Stadt" at the time) to the Federal Republic. After graduating from the Waldorf School in Wuppertal, he studied German, history, philosophy and (from 1963) German folklore in Freiburg / Br., Cologne and Tübingen from 1961 . In 1966 he passed the state examination. In 1968 he received his doctorate under Hermann Bausinger with a thesis on the history of science and ideology of German and folklore. phil.

From 1968 to 1970 he taught as an assistant professor in the USA, first at the University of Georgia , then at the State University of New York (SUNY). In 1970/71 he was an academic advisor at the University of Tübingen and from 1971 to 1977 assistant professor at the University of Bremen. In 1978 he became professor for modern German literary history and cultural studies at the University of Bremen. After the rejection of a call to the University of Tübingen, he founded the Bremen Institute for Cultural Studies in Germany (IFKUD) in 1988 .

He was visiting professor in the USA (Madison / Wisconsin, Bloomington / Indiana - Distinguished Max Kade Visiting Professor , Brown Univ. Providence / Rhode Island, Cornell Univ., Ithaca / NY, University of Illinois Chicago - "Distinguished Max Kade Visiting Professor") , in Paris VIII and Turin and was a visiting fellow at New College in Oxford in 1999 .

From 1978 to 1987 he was a member of the jury of the Literature Prize of the City of Bremen and from 1990 to 2014 a member of the jury of the Jeanette Schocken Prize Bremerhaven. In 1991 he was appointed to the Collegium Europaeum Jenense at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1993 he led the 35th Tateshina Seminar for the advanced training of Japanese Germanists. From 1994 to 1996 he was first chairman of the “International Working Group on Literature and Politics in Germany” in Bonn.

In 2006 he retired.
