Wolfgang Feustel

Wolfgang Feustel (born November 26, 1932 in Greiz ) is a former colonel in the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1978 to 1986 he was head of Stasi Department IV, responsible for preparing acts of sabotage.

Life

Feustel, son of a seamstress and a chemist, learned the trade of cooper after elementary school , but in 1950 he joined the fire brigade of the German People's Police . In 1951 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). In 1952 he switched to the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP) and later worked for the criminal police in East Berlin .

In 1954 Feustel was hired by the MfS and deployed to Main Department II, responsible for counter-espionage. From 1965 to 1970 he completed a distance learning course at the University of the MfS (JHS) in Potsdam-Eiche and became a qualified lawyer . In 1966 he became deputy head of department and in 1971 head of the "Moscow operational group" within Main Department II of the MfS. In 1978 Feustel became head of Department IV, responsible for the preparation of acts of sabotage and so-called special warfare. In 1979 he was promoted to colonel.

In 1986 Feustel moved to the Headquarters Enlightenment (HVA), the GDR's foreign intelligence service, where he became an officer for special tasks. In 1987 he was employed as an MfS officer in the center for information and documentation of foreign trade (ZIDA) at the Ministry for Foreign Trade of the GDR. In 1988 Feustel was appointed security officer in the GDR Council of Ministers .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Feustel was released from work and dismissed from service in 1989.
