Wolfgang Foerster (military historian)

Wolfgang Foerster (born August 4, 1875 in Breslau , † October 14, 1963 in Icking ) was a German officer and military historian .

Life

Wolfgang Foerster, Otfried Foerster's younger brother , joined the Prussian army as a flag junior in 1894 after finishing school . As a result, he went through a general staff career. During the First World War , Foerster was initially on the staff of the V Army Corps and later became Chief of the General Staff of General Command 66. In 1920 he was retired from military service with the rank of lieutenant colonel .

Immediately afterwards he moved to the Reichsarchiv as senior archivist . There, Foerster was appointed director of the historical department in 1931, and in 1935 director of the Research Institute for Army and War History, and since 1937 the War History Research Institute of the Army. Finally, in 1937, Foerster was given the title of professor in 1944, the office of president which he held until his retirement in 1945. He died on October 14, 1963 at the age of 88 in Icking.
