Wolfgang Künne

Wolfgang Künne (born July 14, 1944 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a retired German professor of philosophy .

Life

Künne passed the Abitur in 1963 at the humanistic high school in Gelsenkirchen. In 1964 he began studying philosophy and Protestant theology at the University of Heidelberg . In 1967 and 1968 he continued his studies at King's College London and Oxford continued before in 1972 Hans-Georg Gadamer with a thesis on " Dialectics and theory of ideas in Plato's Parmenides with the Plato-interpretation" in which he Hegel dealt , received a doctorate . Until his habilitation in 1980 he was a research assistant at the University of Hamburg . The subject of his habilitation thesis is “Abstract Objects. Semantics and Ontology ". In his inaugural lecture he dealt with Gadamer and Donald Davidson and the relationship between “understanding and meaning”. He then received a position as a private lecturer.

After a substitute professorship in Bielefeld in 1984 , Künne was appointed to a professorship (C 2) in Hamburg in 1985. Another representation took place in 1988 in Freiburg , Switzerland . After appointments to the Universities of Mannheim and Bielefeld and a further substitute professorship in Bielefeld from 1992 to 1993, Künne was appointed full professor in Hamburg in 1993 . He held the position until his retirement in October 2010. During this time he was visiting professor in Venice (1995) and Reading (2001). He also held the “ Gareth Evans Memorial Lecture” at Wolfson College as a visiting fellow in Oxford in 1998 and the “Winchester Lectures” at St. Catherine's College in 1999. In 2007 he was the first “Gottlob Frege Lecturer” at the University of Tartu . In the same year he became a full member of the Academia Europaea , London, and in 2009 a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Also in 2009 he was the first to be awarded the “ Frege Prize ” of the Society for Analytical Philosophy . Künne is on the board of directors of the International Bolzano Society. Jürgen Kaube described Künne in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as "one of the most important and most unknown German philosophers of our time".

Focus

In addition to the thematic examination of the question of universals , the theory of meaning and truth , Künne dealt primarily with the philosophy of Gottlob Freges and Bernard Bolzano . He also edited anthologies on these two philosophers. On the philosophy of art he worked on type theory and on the theory of fictions with Frege.
