Wolfgang Lieb (* 1944 in Stuttgart ) is a German lawyer and journalist . He was government spokesman and state secretary in North Rhine-Westphalia and from 2003 to 2015 he was co-editor and author of the political website NachDenkSeiten .

Life

Lieb comes from a pietistic family; his grandfather was a preacher at the Hahn Brothers Congregation . At the age of 14, Lieb took the " Landexamen " and attended boarding school to prepare for the profession of pastor. However, after a crisis of faith, he changed his life plan and resigned from the church.

From 1964 Lieb studied politics and law at the Free University of Berlin . In the same year he also joined the SPD and became a member of the Social Democratic University Association (SHB), where he rose to the federal executive board. In 1967 he moved to the University of Cologne . In 1969/70 he was briefly a member of the board of the Association of German Student Associations (VDS).

Even as a student, Lieb worked as a journalist for the West German Broadcasting Corporation , but then decided to pursue an academic career. He received his doctorate on the subject of “ Cable TV and Broadcasting Laws” and in 1972 became a research assistant at the newly founded comprehensive university in Essen , and from 1976 research assistant at Bielefeld University .

In 1979 he switched to the planning department of the Federal Chancellery in Bonn as a research assistant , which was then headed by Albrecht Müller . In 1983 Lieb became head of the policy department in the state representation of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bonn. From 1987 he was first deputy and later government spokesman and head of the State Press and Information Office of North Rhine-Westphalia under Prime Minister Johannes Rau . From 1996 to 2000 Lieb was most recently State Secretary in the Ministry of Science in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since the end of 2003 he has been running the political website NachDenkSeiten together with Albrecht Müller , for which he received the alternative media award in 2009 . Since 2007, Müller and Lieb have also published The Critical Yearbook - Reflections on Germany together . In October 2015, Lieb stopped working on the NachDenkseiten because he no longer wanted to support the political orientation of the project.

Lieb is a member of the Cologne Public Broadcasting Initiative .

Political positions

University reform, Bologna process

Lieb was early disillusioned with the higher education reform, which he initially supported, and the Bologna process . On the basis of the developments in the reform, he came to the conclusion that it tended to impair the quality of research and teaching and, instead of strengthening and maintaining a European model of education, was copying the Anglo-Saxon model, which was oriented towards market conformity and social separation. The overwhelming majority of researchers and teachers at the universities and especially the students have become significantly less free with the "new" freedom compared to their earlier rights of participation and participation than under the earlier - albeit not optimal - academic self-administration. He sees the function of the university council as the core element of a “functional privatization” of public and mostly state-funded universities. "After attempts in Germany to set up private universities, both in terms of quantity and quality - especially in terms of research quality - did not have any resounding success, the advocates of the" entrepreneurial university "have now privatized the public universities from within."
