Wolfgang Müller-Osten (born August 1, 1910 in Breslau ; † August 15, 1995 in Bühlerhöhe ) was a German surgeon and professional politician.

Life

Müller-Osten studied medicine at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms University . In 1929 he became active in the Corps Lusatia Breslau . During the Second World War , Müller-Osten was a medical officer in the Navy . He drove on the light cruiser Emden and spent 500 days at sea with the auxiliary cruiser Orion . Since he aspired to the surgical university training as a naval chief medical officer, he sat in on the large surgical clinics in Erlangen ( Otto Goetze ), Strasbourg and Berlin ( Otto Nordmann ). When the war ended, he had to bury his academic plans. In order to “maintain his political independence”, he settled in Hamburg as a surgeon in 1950. Müller-Osten was involved in the Association of Freelance Surgeons in Hamburg, which was founded in 1953 . The Professional Association of German Surgeons developed from it in 1960 , and he became its 1st Chairman in 1961. Until 1982 he was the longest serving president. Like most of the Wroclaw Lusatians, he had been a member of the corps formed with Lusatia Leipzig since November 6, 1993 . He died shortly after his 85th birthday.

With his fortune, Müller-Osten founded the Wolfgang-Müller-Osten Foundation . Every year it awards “a scholarship for the promotion of scientific work that deals with the history of surgery, the preservation of substance and unity of surgery, the future development of surgery, quality assurance of surgical activity in hospitals and practices, the scientific and ethical foundations of medical science , in particular the surgical profession ”.

The professional association of German surgeons has been awarding the Wolfgang Müller Osten Medal at irregular intervals since 1997 to members who have rendered outstanding services to the association. Well-known surgeons such as Friedrich Stelzner , Hans-Jürgen Peiper and Karsten Vilmar are among the winners . For many years, Müller-Osten, who had not qualified as a professor, was elected as a non-permanent member of the advisory board of the (university) German Society for Surgery . Friedrich Stelzner, professor in Bonn, paid tribute to him as "Gideon" .
