Wolfgang Maria Hagl OSB (born June 1, 1953 in Au in der Hallertau as Johann Hagl ) has been abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Metten since 1989 .

Life

Hagl grew up on a farm in the municipality of Rudelzhausen . From 1964 he attended the Reuchlin-Gymnasium in Ingolstadt and lived in the nearby Canisiuskonvikt . As a member of the Ingolstadt Marian Congregation , he came into contact with the Fathers of the Metten Monastery. After graduating from high school in 1973, he entered the monastery there, took the religious name Wolfgang and in 1974 made his religious vows .

From 1975 to 1980 he studied theology in Eichstätt and Salzburg . On July 5, 1980 he was ordained a priest in Metten by Archbishop Paul Augustin Mayer OSB. He was a chaplain in Metten for five years and in March 1986 took over the parish of the Metten mother parish Michaelsbuch .

In September 1989 Wolfgang Maria Hagl was elected as the successor to Emmeram Geser as 58th abbot. The Abtsbenediktion he received by Cardinal Paul Augustin Mayer, the 56th abbot in Metten. Hagl's abbot stems from the prologue of the Rule of Benedict and reads Per ducatum evangelii (Under the guidance of the Gospel).

Today Abbot Wolfgang Maria Hagl is the longest serving abbot of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation . He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for maintaining the Benedictine Metten Abbey and for his cultural commitment. He teaches religion at the order's own grammar school.

Awards

On November 22, 2012, Abbot Wolfgang Maria Hagl was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by State Secretary Bernd Sibler for the following reason:

“HH Abbot Wolfgang M. Hagl OSB from Metten is working hard to maintain and carefully renovate the listed Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael. The abbot is also extensively involved in the musical and cultural area. For example, the "Concerts in the Metten Monastery" have been taking place for over two decades and the premises of the monastery are made available for lecture series on current affairs. The St. Michaels-Gymnasium Metten, the connected historical educational establishment with boarding school and day school sponsored by the abbey, was able to develop an excellent reputation far beyond the national borders during the time of his careful work as abbot. "
