Wolfgang Methling (born September 9, 1947 in Kavelstorf ) is a German politician ( SED , PDS , Die Linke ).

From 1998 to 2006 he was Environment Minister and from 2002 to 2006 Deputy Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . From 2006 to April 2009 he was chairman of the parliamentary group of the Left and thus opposition leader in the state parliament. From 2010 to 2011 he was spokesman for the parliamentary group for university policy, research and science policy and from 2007 to 2014 in the federal executive committee of the party Die Linke .

Life and work

After graduating from high school with a certificate for cattle breeding in 1966, Methling completed a degree in veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig , which he completed in 1971 as a qualified veterinarian. He then did military service with the NVA from 1972 to 1974 . In 1978 he received his doctorate (dissertation A) as Dr. med. vet. at the University of Leipzig with the thesis "A contribution to the investigation of the influence of visible light on the reaction capacity of the calf's defense against infection with special consideration of the transformation of the lymphocytes of the peripheral blood" . In 1982 he passed the veterinarian exam for animal hygiene. In 1984 he qualified as a Dr. sc. (Dissertation B) with the thesis “The occurrence of selected bacterial groups and species in pig breeding stalls and their usability as indicator germs” . In 1985 he accepted the position of lecturer in animal hygiene at the University of Rostock . In 1992 he was appointed professor for animal health here .

Wolfgang Methling has been married since 1972 and has two children.

Political party

After Methling became a member of the SED in 1966, he held several honorary functions in the Free German Youth (FDJ), the trade union and the Unity Party. His political career, which had started in basic organizations of the SED, continued after the fall of the Wall . From 1991 to 1995 Methling was deputy chairman of the PDS regional association Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. From June 2003 to June 2007 he was Deputy Federal Chairman of the PDS or Die Linkspartei.PDS. He is the spokesman for the Federal Working Group on Environment, Energy and Transport. At the party congress of the party Die Linke on June 16, 2007 he was elected to the federal executive committee.

MP

From 1994 to 1995 Methling chairman was the PDS faction in the citizenship of the city of Rostock .

From 2006 to 2011 he was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and chairman of the state parliamentary group Die Linke until April 2009 .

Public offices

After the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1998 , a red-red coalition was first formed at state level in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Methling was therefore appointed on November 3, 1998 as Environment Minister in the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania led by Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff ( SPD ). After the state elections in 2002, he was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister on November 6, 2002. After the SPD entered into a grand coalition with the CDU after the state elections in 2006 , Methling left office on November 7, 2006. He is a member of the Rostock district council .
