geography
Kavelstorf is ten kilometers southeast of Rostock , between the lower Warnow and the Warnow tributaries Kösterbeck and Zarnow . Parts of the valleys of these three bodies of water are designated as nature reserves .
The districts of Griebnitz, Klingendorf and Niex belonged to the formerly independent municipality of Kavelstorf.
history
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Griebnitz was incorporated.
church
The village church from the 13th century is remarkable . The walls are made of field stones. The builders were Westphalian settlers who founded Kavelstorf around 1225. Because of the massive, square tower, it can be assumed that the church served the villagers as a fortified church in the Middle Ages . In the chancel, the east wall is adorned with two pictures made using the plaster and scratch technique from the time the church was built. They depict the Entombment and Ascension of Christ . These images were only rediscovered in 1985. The windows in the chancel are Romanesque , while those in the nave and tower have Gothic elements.
The church has been a motorway church since 2000 .
Transport links
Kavelstorf is on the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde railway and the Rostock – Rostock North Seaport railway line . The former is integrated into the Rostock S-Bahn network (S 3 Rostock – Güstrow); The latter railway line is only used for freight traffic.
Thanks to its immediate location at the Rostock A19 and A20 motorway junction , Kavelstorf is well connected to the national road network.
