The Protestant village church Kavelstorf is a listed church building in Kavelstorf , a district of the municipality of Dummerstorf in the Rostock district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). The church on the outskirts of Rostock is used as a motorway church, it is located on the A 19 Rostock-Berlin, at the Kavelstorf exit. The parish belongs to the Rostock provost in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

History and architecture

The building was started in the middle of the 13th century by Westphalian settlers using brick , mostly field stone , both as a sacred and protective building. It looks impressive and well-proportioned. The rectangular choir has moved in; the sacristy on the north side stands over a square floor plan. Then the short, one-bay ship and the mighty square west tower were built. The tower is as wide as the ship. The second floor of the tower goes over corner bevels into an octagonal upper floor, which is crowned with a simple helmet . The helmet and the choir gable were renewed in 1791 according to an inscription. The three choir walls are divided by paired, arched windows, those of the nave by a staggered, pointed arched three-window group. The former round arched priest's gate in the south wall of the choir, with a round rod archivolt over consoles , was bricked up. Originally there was a pointed arched portal on each side of the tower; the southern one is decorated with a clover leaf arch, the western one was renewed during the renovation in 1875. The tower hall has a flat roof and opens out towards the ship with a wide pointed arch. In the choir and in the nave a domical vault rests on head consoles and ribbon ribs. The crown ribs in the choir are designed as a cross. The diagonal ribs have a round bar profile. A large piscina has been preserved in the south-west corner of the domed sacristy . The vaults are decorated with ornaments, figurative paintings from the third quarter of the 13th century have been preserved on the east wall. They show the resurrection and ascension of Christ, as well as the descent into hell of Christ . What is striking is the caricature-like depiction of a figure in the triumphal arch, which is labeled "Yk bin en prebeke" (I am a tenant). She is associated with a tenant dispute in Kavelstorf.

Restoration after the fall of the Wall

The German Foundation for Monument Protection provided money to secure and carry out extensive renovation measures. The foundation is supported by an association founded in 1998. The masonry is up to four meters thick, its outer shell made of field stone loosened over a large area, and so the field stone facade threatened to collapse. The masonry was needled and pressed. The roof was re-covered. In the area of the eaves damage by sponge occurred because the wooden structure was probably not adequately repaired in the past. The tower was extensively renovated, the wooden structure of the roof structure was partially renewed and the bell cage was completed at the same time .
