Wolfgang Meyer (teacher)

Wolfgang Friedrich Oskar Meyer (born May 31, 1867 in Hamburg ; † December 1, 1957 there ) was a German teacher and sports official.

Life

Meyer graduated from the Johanneum School of Academics . He studied at the Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen Philology . During his studies he became a member of the Tübingen fraternity Derendingia in 1885/1886 . After graduating as Dr. phil. he became a teacher at his old high school. He later became director of the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg. This was followed by the appointment to the school board and then to the high school board.

Meyer was 2nd chairman of the Hamburg gymnastics association from 1816 and Gau leader of the Gau Nordmark of the German gymnastics association. He also worked as a teacher at the Johanneum and the secondary school Sankt Pauli in Hamburg. Most recently he was headmaster and high school councilor. He endowed the Hamburg schools with the Wolfgang Meyer Wanderpreis , which was awarded annually in competitions. In recognition of his achievements, the Senate named a sports field on the Sternschanze after him. Today the Wolfgang Meyer sports facility , a Hamburger SV venue, bears his name.

During the First World War he was a captain and battalion leader.

Meyer developed an extensive journalistic activity.
