Wolfgang Paul (born January 25, 1940 in Olsberg ) is a former German football player .
Life
Wolfgang Paul is a trained master watchmaker and goldsmith.
Career
Wolfgang Paul learned to play football at TuS Bigge 06 . As a 17-year-old Paul joined VfL Schwerte until the then coach Max Merkel lured him to Borussia Dortmund . Paul was doing his military service at that time and played in the Westphalia team . The 1.86 m tall half-forward was converted into a successful head of defense at BVB. Paul made his biggest appearance in the final stages of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965/66 . In the semifinals against West Ham United and in the final against Liverpool , he saved BVB from taking the 2-1 lead over time.
As a stopper and defense organizer, he played for Borussia Dortmund from 1961 to 1970 . He played 148 times (six goals) in the Bundesliga and won the German Cup with Borussia in 1963, DFB Cup winners in 1965 and European Cup winners in 1966 . From 1965 to 1968 Paul was the team's captain. In 1966 he and the BVB team were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .
In April 1966, Paul was first invited to the national team by national coach Helmut Schön and made his debut in Bremen in a 1-0 win against a Budapest city selection. In 1966 he took part with the DFB selection at the World Cup in England and was runner-up in the world championship without ever having played a game.
Paul's football game was considered tough, but he never received a red card at BVB . In 1968, Paul sustained a severe meniscus injury from which he never fully recovered.
After the professional career
After his career as a player, he worked as a coach at the local football club in his home country Bigge-Olsberg and at SC Willingen.
He is chairman of Borussia Dortmund's council of elders. Since 1971 Paul has been running a watch shop in Bigge / Hochsauerlandkreis called Jewelry and Watch Shop Wolfgang Paul , which is now mainly managed by his daughter.
