The national prize winner enjoys sustained popularity with his Sandmann song for the television program Unser Sandmännchen , which has been heard every evening on German television since 1959 - currently on the public broadcasters RBB , MDR and KiKA . The text of this song comes from Walter Krumbach . Together they also created the children's songs How a Bird Fly and Peace Fighters - Border Soldiers .

Richter also did extensive work as a film music composer for DEFA and GDR children's television. Together with the children's book author Ingeborg Feustel , he also wrote several music picture books as a literary accompaniment to figures on children's television in the GDR such as Pittiplatsch and Schnatterinchen or Mr Fuchs and Ms. Elster .

He also emerged as the creator of socialist youth songs, of which probably pioneers preceded! ("The sun is shining brightly and our step is easy ...") became the most popular.

His grave is in the Wilhelmshagen cemetery in Berlin.
