Wolfgang Schaller (born December 26, 1951 in Schwerin ) is a German theater director and artistic director .

Life

He studied opera directing in Berlin and was a director at the Volkstheater Rostock and senior stage director at the Miners' Theater in Senftenberg . From 1982 he was employed as chief dispatcher at the Semperoper . In 1994 he became director of the Görlitz Music Theater .

In 1999 he became director of the Stadttheater Würzburg : According to the council's deliberations, he should actually take care of its processing or staff reduction to a no longer sustainable level, which, however, was concealed from him beforehand. In the dispute with the Würzburg officials, he finally resigned the management because he was not prepared to follow these tactical games.

He has been the artistic director of the Dresden State Operetta since 2003 and has since stubbornly pursued a new building in the city center. The closure was pursued by the administration of the city of Dresden, in particular the then cultural officer Lutz Vogel and the then finance officer Hartmut Vorjohann , supported by the CDU parliamentary group of the Dresden city council. Lord Mayor Ingolf Roßberg supported him in this endeavor and in 2005 presented the first affordable concept for a new building, at that time on Wiener Platz. With a tactical trick, Schaller succeeded in involving his successor, Mayor Helma Orosz, by offering her the patronage of the fundraising campaign with your name on a chair and she also accepted it.

After several attempts since the 1950s, the State Operetta has now been present in the city center since December 16, 2016, with Dirk Hilbert , who was then councilor for economy (2003) , who also campaigned against any new building and rather for the closure of the house, the new building , now as Lord Mayor, opened. Wolfgang Schaller has been a member since 2010 and secretary of the Performing Arts and Film class at the Saxon Academy of the Arts since October 2015 .

On June 16, 2018, he was awarded the Saxon Constitutional Medal.

The artistic director of the Herkuleskeule cabaret in Dresden is also artistic director there and also bears the name Wolfgang Schaller , although neither are related nor related by marriage: When making public statements, the two are regularly mixed up.

Wolfgang Schaller lives in Dresden, is married and has two children.

His successor in office is to become the dramaturge at the National Theater Weimar Kathrin Kondaurow (* 1983) at the end of the 2018/19 season .
