Wolfgang Schmidt-Hidding

Wolfgang Schmidt-Hidding (born February 27, 1903 in Berlin-Steglitz , † October 7, 1967 in Bonn ) was a German Anglicist .

Life

Schmidt studied in Berlin and Marburg (Lahn), where he received his doctorate in German studies under Ernst Elster in 1927 . From 1928 he was an assistant at Max Deutschbein's English seminar , and in 1931 he completed his habilitation with a study on the English-Scottish ballad . In November 1934 he received a teaching position in Marburg and on June 30, 1937 he became an associate professor. In the winter semester he was transferred to Bonn, where he taught English at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and from 1941 was full professor . In 1934 he developed a völkisch Anglistik in the writing Neuphilologie as foreign studies on the basis of the language study . From 1942 to 1944 he was used as an interpreter for the Wehrmacht . In 1944/45 he taught in Münster and as a representative for Ferdinand Eichler in Graz , where he was released on May 9, 1945. He was interned until 1948. From 1949 he was officially allowed to call himself Schmidt-Hidding.

After denazification, Schmidt-Hidding was again a professor in Bonn from 1961 to 1967. In 1953 he took over the chairmanship of the board of the international exchange organization Experiment eV He held this office until his death in 1967.

In English studies, Schmidt-Hidding devoted himself to linguistic research, in particular comparative word research and stylistics . In addition, he conducted research in the field of literary humor . Schmidt-Hidding held a first advanced seminar on English humor in 1939.

In the course of the transfer of power to the National Socialists , Schmidt-Hidding became a member of the NSDAP and the SA in 1933 . From 1935 he belonged to the Nazi Lecturer Association . He also belonged to the German Christians . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler . During the Second World War he was division manager in the war effort of the humanities ( Aktion Ritterbusch ) and gave lectures for the German labor front . He also wrote reports on the ideological suitability of his colleagues.
