Ferdinand Eichler

Ferdinand Eichler (born October 18, 1863 in Schallan near Teplitz-Schönau , Bohemia ; † April 14, 1945 in Knittelfeld , Styria ) was an Austrian librarian and library scholar .

Life

Eichler studied classical philology and German in Vienna , Graz , Berlin and Heidelberg . He received his doctorate from the University of Graz . From 1888 to 1889 he was a volunteer at the Styrian State Library in Graz. He then got a job at the University Library in Graz , whose director he succeeded Johannes Peisker from 1919 until his retirement in 1924. In 1921 he completed his habilitation in library science. In the same year he became a lecturer and later associate professor for this subject. He is considered to be the founder of library science in Austria.
