Wolfgang Schröder (born April 15, 1945 ) is a former German football player. With FC Vorwärts Frankfurt , BSG Chemie Leipzig and BSG Stahl Riesa , he played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football, in the 1970s and 1980s .

Athletic career

Wolfgang Schröder began his career in the GDR-wide soccer game at the age of 19 with the company sports association (BSG) Stahl in Riesa, Saxony . In the 1964/65 season he played 29 of the 30 point games played in the second-rate GDR league and scored seven goals. In the three following seasons up to 1968 he was always a regular player, was missing in the 90 league games in only six games and was one of the goalscorers with a total of twelve goals in each season. Even when Stahl Riesa had made it to the league in 1968, Schröder was used in all 26 point games. He was mainly called up as a left winger and came to his first four top leagues.

For the 1969/70 season it was planned that Schröder should move to BSG Chemie Leipzig. There, however, as in the entire higher-class game operation, he was not used. In November 1970 he began a three-year military service in the National People's Army and initially played for the Vorwärts Leipzig army sports community in the third-rate district league , which he helped advance to the GDR league. For the 1971/72 season, Schröder moved to the top army club FC Forward Frankfurt and thus returned to the league. However, it was difficult for him to assert himself, and so he was only used in nine league games by the 15th matchday. Once again called up as a striker, he was only in the starting line-up four times. He also played with the second team in five GDR league games, where he scored one goal. In the 1972/73 season things went better for Schröder, because from the 9th day of the game he was called up as a center forward on all subsequent matchdays, where he also scored his only top division goal for FCV. He benefited from the protracted injury to the previous center forward Jürgen Pfefferkorn . In 1973/74 he was again set for the storm center from the start and played in the first nine league games. In October 1973 he was discharged from the army and then played in the second half of the season for the top division chemistry Leipzig. There he was also used in attack, played twelve point games, but scored no goals.

When Chemie Leipzig had to relegate from the league, Schröder returned to BSG Stahl Riesa, where he could continue to play in the league. He came to 21 missions in 1974/75 and resumed his position as a center forward, but still did not score. This occurred in the 1975/76 season when he met three times in his 26 games. Schröder scored a goal in 1976/77 in also 26 league appearances, after which Stahl Riesa had to relegate. The team succeeded in the immediate resurgence, in which Schröder was involved with 21 of 26 point games and all eight promotion games as well as with a total of seven goals. In the following two league seasons, Schröder remained a regular in the Riesa attack formation, made 42 appearances and scored three times. After the 1979/80 season, Wolfgang Schröder ended his career in competitive football. Within 16 years he had played 189 league games (13 goals), 147 GDR league games (25 goals) and eight promotion games (3 goals).
