Wolfgang Ulrich Werner (* 1941 ) is a former chemist , cultural worker and theater founder and director .

Life

Wolfgang Ulrich Werner was born in the middle of World War II and grew up in Hanover . After graduating from school, he worked in the late post-war period from 1959 for around two decades as a sales representative for pharmaceutical and drugstore products until his profession became superfluous due to the "triumphant advance of drugstore chains". In the early 1980s he began to work as a ski and sailing instructor and learned to get by on a monthly income of only around DM 1,000 .

In 1981 Wolfgang Werner returned to his hometown Hanover, where he opened the Werkstatt-Galerie Calenberg (WGC) on Kommandanturstrasse in the Calenberger Neustadt district . There he initially ran a workshop for pottery, lithography and other handicrafts . In addition, he offered various workshops, supplemented his program with exhibitions and - after various theater workshops - first stage events.

However, after various leisure homes also offered - and in some cases cheaper - craft courses, Wolfgang Werner converted his house to a pure theater business in 1983. Since then, numerous artists have appeared in the WGC at the beginning of their careers, such as Matthias Brodowy , Rüdiger Hoffmann , Alix Dudel or the cabaret artist Volker Pispers .

Together with artist friends, Werner also invented new formats such as “the narrative stage, where a professional narrator and the audience have their own say”, or the Calenberg literary breakfast, where well-known writers appear at breakfast. In addition, Wolfgang Werner offered live radio plays and public coaching seminars in his WGC, as well as all rooms for rent for private events.
