Marie-Pierre Pruvot
Marie-Pierre Pruvot , called Bambi (also known under the pseudonym Marie Pierre Ysser , born November 11, 1935 in Isser, Algeria ) is a French pioneer and idol of the transsexual movement , revue from the 1950s to 1970s, teacher and writer .
Life
childhood
Bambi was born as Jean-Pierre Pruvot in the village of Isser, in what was then the Grande Kabylie department in Algeria. When she was around 3 to 6 years old, she began to wear her older sister's dresses and skirts, but her parents forbade her to do so when she started school. According to her own admission, her childhood, "... although generally happy, ... partially botched, ..., by the contrast on the one hand between my desire to be a girl - and even the certainty that I am and will remain - and on the other hand." Look, the words of those around me, all the obstacles that are placed against my inner truth. Over time I feel the burden of an externally imposed condemnation that forces me to make a constant effort (voice, hairstyle, clothes, gestures, gait ...) to avoid a scandal, especially after the death of my father, which affects me sensitively (I'm 14 years old at the moment). "
During her school days in Ménerville (Arabic: Thénia ) she was a withdrawn child who spent most of the time in her room reading, and "... waiting for a miracle that will make me the woman I am". After the third grade, she switched to a lycée for boys in Algiers.
She began to suffer significantly from her situation, which was also reflected in her academic performance. At the age of 16 she had a key experience when she saw the later famous transsexual Coccinelle in a casino during a tour of the Parisian travesty cabaret Le Carrousel , who at that time had already assumed a feminine appearance through hormones and some cosmetic surgery , but before her sex reassignment surgery. Bambi then decided to go to Paris to live there as a woman and to try her luck in the travesty life there.
Time in paris
Until her debut at the travesty cabaret Chez Madame Arthur in Paris, she had to wait until she reached the legal age of 18. In September 1954 she switched to the Carrousel . She took the stage name “Bambi”, worked and lived with Coccinelle, who “does everything to help me”. In contrast to their travesty colleagues, the two not only appeared on stage as women, but lived an everyday life as women around the clock, although the public wearing of women's clothes was permitted for people who were born and registered as physically male this time was strictly forbidden and was followed by the police. Bambi took estrogens for the purpose of feminizing her body. In addition to Coccinelle, she became a star of the scene and also appeared on tours of the Carrousel .
Two years after Coccinelle's sex reassignment surgery (1958) with Dr. Georges Burou in Casablanca , who was a sensation in the press at the time , also had Bambi operated on, and from then on was also a woman physically. Her previous friend and partner then left her.
After the Carrousel was moved to Club Elle et Lui , she met Ute, a lesbian woman from Germany who called herself "Eric", and with whom she performed together. A love relationship developed between the two .
Because of her Algerian descent, and because of the Algerian-French war in the 1960s, Bambi had to wait years for her identity papers to be corrected, despite her gender reassignment and despite her clearly feminine appearance. She eventually turned directly to Algerian authorities and received the name change requested . From then on she was officially called Marie-Pierre Pruvot; automatically she also got a birth entry as "female".
Studies and career as a teacher
While she continued to earn her living at night with performances in the Carrousel , she began studying for her baccalauréat during the day , which she finally caught up with at the age of 33. She then studied French literature at the Sorbonne , with all the required degrees (1972 License, 1973 Maîtrise, 1974 Capes), and finally got a job as a teacher of French literature at a school in Cherbourg in 1974 from the Éducation Nationale . Since she missed her former contact with the Parisian nightlife there, two years later she moved to the Collège “ Pablo Picasso ” in Garges-lès-Gonesse in the Paris region. Here she taught for 25 years without her past as a "travesty" star coming to light. At the end of her teaching career, she was awarded the “ Palmes académiques ”. At that time, she was only the second teacher at her school to receive this honor.
After retirement: books, films, awards
After her retirement , Bambi published various books, initially under the pseudonym Marie-Pierre Ysser the novel J'inventais ma vie - for which she later wrote several serial volumes - and in 2007 also her autobiography Marie parce que c'est jolie (“Marie, because it's so pretty ”; Editions Bonobo). Since then she has been revered by the French transsexual movement as one of the most important pioneers.
Marie Pierre Pruvot was invited to several talk shows on French television over the next few years (including on 28 January 2008 by Mireille Dumas in “Vie privée, vie publique” on France 3). The filmmaker Sébastien Lifshitz filmed her life using old image and film material: The film Bambi received the Teddy Award for best documentary film at the Berlinale in 2013 and was nominated for César in 2014 in the category “best short film”. Before that, she had worked alongside April Ashley , Colette Berends and others in the Dutch documentary I am a woman now (originally: Casablanca Revisited , 2011) by Michiel van Erp, which deals with the lives of some transsexuals who were led by Dr. Georges Burou in Casablanca. Bambi / Marie Pierre Pruvot can also be seen in the television documentary Absolument Trans by Stéphanie Cabre and Claire Duguet (first broadcast on June 9, 2016 at 10:25 pm on Arte ). In July 2015, she was photographed by New York photographer Steven Meisel for the Italian edition of Vogue .
Bambi herself said in retrospect about her life that, in her opinion, she had not achieved everything that she could have achieved under other circumstances, “... The complexity of my difficulties has completely occupied me. As far as the major orientations of my personal life are concerned, I am sure that I made the right decisions at the right time. "
On November 24, 2014, she was awarded the Chevalier dans l'ordre national du Mérite by former minister Roselyne Bachelot at the Center LGBT in Paris . In her acceptance speech, Bambi commented on the current situation of transsexual people in France:
“... There are still too many people in France who are marginalized and who long to live freely, normally and without scandal, to be able to travel without obstacles, to be treated in hospital without embarrassment - everything Things that are often out of their reach. I hereby dedicate this award to you, which is such a great honor for me ... "

”See: Bambi biography on her official website , viewed January 2018
