In the Wolf Gorge

The Wolfschlucht , in other spelling Wolfsschlucht , is the steep incision of the short and pleasing Schlossbächlein in the Odenwald , which flows into the Neckar from the right at Zwingenberg in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg .

Surname

Two variants of the name are officially used. This is what the community of Zwingenberg calls the gorge Wolfsschlucht on its website , and the state surveying office of Baden-Württemberg uses the name Wolfschlucht on its maps .

geography

The Wolfsschlucht is an approximately one kilometer long notch valley that the castle brook created through erosion in the red sandstone on its lower reaches. About one kilometer above the mouth at about 130  m above sea level. NN flows from the right to about 275  m above sea level. NN the Engelsbach coming from the north into the creek flowing here to the west-southwest, which is about 1.7 km further up at the Untere Post farmstead of the community Waldbrunn at about 465  m above sea level. NN rises. On its lower part before the confluence, the upper course of the Schlossbächlein is largely filled with rubble, so that no open watercourse is visible there in summer. The Engelsbach, although apparently more watery, rises only about 1.3 km further up at the so-called Engelsbrunnen at almost 440  m above sea level. NN . Both source brooks still flow a few hundred meters above their confluence in hollow valleys with less profile.

The wolf blade cuts through the red sandstone of the Odenwald. The Klingenbach often falls several meters high over rock banks, lying on the narrow valley floor, which is sometimes bordered on both sides by rock walls or overhangs, leaning against rock walls or over block rubble, fallen and moss-covered tree trunks, the vegetation of which is moistened by the constant spray . On steep slopes of the earth, parts often slide off.

The Wolf Gorge is part of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park .

The last wolf of the Odenwald was hunted near the Wolfschlucht in 1866.

Romantic opera

Like the Wolfsschlucht in Baden-Baden and the Weber Grotto in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains , the Zwingenberger is said to have inspired Carl Maria von Weber for his opera Der Freischütz . On the castle Zwingenberg at the exit of the gorge this opera will be performed at the annual Castle Festival.

Hiking trails

Path in the Wolf Gorge

Several hiking trails run through the Wolf Gorge, which are bundled in the most romantic section between Zwingenberg Castle and the aforementioned stream confluence. This partial steel cables as a grip aid bidding path downed tree trunks and several meters leads to large boulders, deep over red sandstone benches falling water over, even through the bed and one on a stone bridge over the creek, runs to a large extent but also significantly above the valley floor on the left Hillside. At the confluence of the stream, a continuation turns above the right edge of the ravine back down towards the mouth and then essentially follows the right slope of the Neckar to Eberbach. Another continuation leads along the partially hidden source stream towards Waldbrunn-Oberdielbach. A third follows the Engelsbach up into the valley at a distance and then reaches Eberbach-Unterdielbach.

From the mouth of the stream into the Neckar below Zwingenberg Castle, there is a connection to the castle and the gorge path described above via a path that has partially slipped today (2008). After heavy rainfall and in the bad season, it is difficult and not without danger to move forward in the lower valley parts on the bottom that are not accessible from the path.

Just five kilometers upriver near Neckargerach is the significantly shorter and somewhat less romantic Margarethenschlucht gorge, which is similar in nature to the valley and has a better maintained path.
