Working !! is a manga series written and illustrated by Karino Takatsu . The series, published from 2005 to 2015, was adapted by several radio plays as well as by an anime television series animated by A-1 Pictures .

content

At the center of the action is the student Sōta, who is approached by Popura, who is a year older but very small, and asked whether he would like to work as a temporary worker in the family restaurant Wagnaria . Inspired by this and spurred on by his affection for “little things”, he is ready to work as a temporary worker. However, he is confronted with other employees in the restaurant, most of whom have a special personality. The manager Kyōko, who has numerous connections to the Mafia, doesn't care at all about the wishes of her guests and instead lets Yachiyo take care of her, who in turn has an extreme affection for Kyōko. Meanwhile, Mahiru cannot hold back from beating men because she is afraid of them. The two-headed kitchen staff, consisting of Jun and Hiroomi, is a bit more reserved, whereby Jun cannot stand Sōta from the start and treats him accordingly.

Having got into this situation, Sōta is confronted with everyday life in the restaurant, which is repeatedly characterized by special, self-imposed and sometimes absurd rules. At the same time, he tries to keep the business going, always serving as a scapegoat and regularly taking on the work of the other employees.

Characters

Sōta Takanashi ( 小鳥 遊 宗 太 , Takanashi Sōta )
He is the main character in the manga series and has a strong weakness for little things that he thinks are cute. So he has a very friendly relationship and a certain affection for Popura. Always worried by the absurdity of his employees, he tries to do his job as well as possible. He has three older sisters, one of whom regularly visits Wagnaria . They are also the reason why he has an aversion to larger and older women, since he always had to suffer from them.
Popura Taneshima ( 種 島 ぽ ぷ ら , Taneshima Popura )
Behind the protagonist she is the main female character of Working !! and long-term employee in the restaurant. The high school student is very small for her age - she is a year older than Sōta - and was ironically named after the tall plant genus of the poplar (Japanese ポ プ ラ , Populus ). Still, Popura is a busy employee, even if she is repeatedly handicapped by her weak physical stature. In addition, she makes mistakes from time to time and is unable to memorize the protagonist's family name, whom she keeps calling Katanashi instead of Takanashi, even if she has just been corrected.

Origin and publications

Web manga

Its beginnings found Working !! in a webcomic of the same name , which was also written by the later author Karino Takatsu . Individual strips were initially published on the website at irregular intervals from 2002 to 2013, but they differ both in the style of the plot and in the presentation from the manga series that resulted from it. Since July 25th, 2015 these web chapters are called Web-ban Working !! (WEB WORKING !!) published in book form, of which five volumes have been published so far (as of February 2017).

Print manga

The series itself, which is written in the style of a Yonkoma , was published by Young Gangan magazine from December 2014 (issue 1/2015) to November 7 (issue 22/2016) . A first summary of the individual chapters as Tankōbon was published on December 25, 2005 by Square Enix , the publisher of the magazine. Ten further chapters have meanwhile been offered for download on mobile phones. In the run-up to the anime adaptation, individual chapters were also published on the anime's website every two weeks. The final chapter is to be published on November 7, 2014.

Outside of Japan, the manga was licensed for a Chinese translation in Taiwan by Tong Li Comics .

A sequel called Working !! Re: Order was published from January 5 (issue 2/2015) to June 5, 2015 (issue 12/2015) and was also summarized in an anthology.

Adaptations

Radio plays

Square Enix released the Young Gangan Book In CD Working !! ( ヤ ン グ ガ ン ガ ン ブ ッ ク ・ イ ン ・ CD WORKING !! ) three radio plays on the manga, the plot of which was written by Shōgo Mukai. The first CD was published on January 25, 2007 together with a 96-page booklet , which, in addition to a transcript of the story, also contained an extra chapter from the manga series. The second and third CD contained a similarly extensive booklet and were released on April 25, 2008 and March 25, 2009.
