Worried Men Skiffle Group was a music group from 1960 to 2014 that was influential in the Viennese dialect wave of Austropop .

General information about the band

The group last consisted of Edi Fischer (* 1946 in Ellwangen an der Jagst, Germany), Günther Pini (* 1942 in Oberpullendorf , Burgenland ), Gerhard "Doc" Richter (born April 26, 1943 in Vienna ), Herbert "Hiero" Janata (* July 21, 1940 in Vienna) and Günther "Blesh" Dinold (* 1943 in Vienna). From 1967 to 1968 the musician Gotthard Fellerer was a member of the group.

In October 1960, Gerhard “Doc” Richter and Herbert “Hiero” Janata worked together to create a band that, ten years later, was to influence the Austrian music scene with its mixture of blues, folk, swinging jazz and Viennese humor.

They mainly played on simple objects such as a washboard or a wooden box called a "tub-bass" with a broomstick and a taut clothesline and on common instruments such as guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and a kazoo . Their style of music is characterized by skifflening , a style in which each individual artist plays his music and a piece is improvised from it together.

In the last few decades, the band has not only used the tried and tested songs from the American folk, jazz and blues area, but also increasingly the sometimes time-critical and sometimes macabre-comic lyrics of Franz (i) Bilik, who died in 1983 in an accident . In 2005 the band celebrated their 45th birthday with a multi-day festival in Vienna's Jazzland . The group is considered to be a pioneer of Austro-pop, especially because of the texts that were kept in Viennese dialect from the 1970s onwards .

In 2010 the five musicians were awarded the Silver Medal of Merit of the State of Vienna .

In 2014, for health and personal reasons, the end of the band's stage appearances was announced.
