Wrecking Crew was an American hardcore punk band from Boston and was part of the straight edge scene there.

Band history

In January 1987, Wrecking Crew was formed from members of the hardcore punk scene who had not yet appeared musically until then. The first line-up included Glenn Dudley (vocals), John Darga ( guitar ), Ralph DiNunzio (guitar), Keith Ennett ( bass ) and drummer EK, who was replaced by Taras Hrabec after a short time. The band was formed during the Boston hardcore punk phase, when most of the old bands like SS Decontrol , DYS and Jerry's Kids had broken up. In contrast to the aforementioned bands, Wrecking Crew chose a more metal- oriented style. Inspirations were among others Agnostic Front , Discharge , Broken Bones and Battalion of Saints .

On May 27, 1987 the first gig in the opening act of Corrosion of Conformity took place. After further gigs in Boston, they visited a recording studio in January 2008 and recorded a total of eight songs, including a cover of Negative Approach . Four songs were released by Mark MacKayes ( Slapshot ) label Vortex. At a gig with Uniform Choice and Warzone at the CBGBs in New York City , the band met John Bello from Hawker Records (a sub-label of Roadrunner Records ), who offered them a contract. In 1989 the debut album Balance of Terror was released . The band recorded live tracks for the Free for All compilation and two more songs for a sampler for Thrasher magazine in the CBGBs . Then the band went on their first (and only) US tour, which was not very successful.

After the tour, Wrecking Crew wanted to record material for a new album when the Hawker label went bankrupt. The recordings in the Synchro Studios were recorded as a demo in 1991 and later published on the 1987–1991 compilation . Wrecking Crew were able to negotiate a record deal with Maze Records through Biohazard , but this label also ceases its services shortly afterwards.

In 1991, Glenn Dudley dropped out and was replaced by Elgin Nathan James , a founding member of the infamous straight-edge gang Friends Stand United . Guitarist John Darga also got out and was replaced first by Nick Clancy, then by Dean Baltulonis. With James and Clancy they made a self-titled 7 '' which was released by Sonic Aggression Records in 1993. In 1994 the band broke up for good. Elgin James and Dean Baltulonis then founded 454 Big Block and later The World is my Fuse .

In 2005 a compilation with old material was released under the title 1987-1991 on the Bridge Nine Records label . The song Why Must They was re-recorded in April 2004, as the rights to the LP were still with Roadrunner. It wasn't until 2006 that I Scream Records managed to re-release the debut album.
