action

The 12-year-old Paweł lives with his older brother Piotr and his mother Zofia in a small village on the Polish Baltic coast near Gdansk . The father died of drinking two years ago and mother Zofia is also terminally ill. The doctors are already giving up, but Paweł believes it will be a miracle . At school, Paweł is known for his talent for running. He is trained by his sports teacher Andrzej, who would have long since lost his job due to his alcoholism, had it not been for the preparation for an international competition in Leipzig .

Paweł believes that he must make a pilgrimage to the Black Madonna in Jasna Góra in Częstochowa in order to save his mother from certain death. First he tries his brother, but is brought back to his mother by the police. When he is making the long journey to southern Poland alone in running clothes, he meets his sports teacher. Paweł and Andrzej join forces. Andrzej looks after and helps the boy. Paweł tries to rid his teacher of alcohol. Andrzej senses a source of money with the boy's run. He persuades his ex-wife Anna, who works as a journalist for regional television, to report on the boy.

The television successfully launches a fundraising campaign for an operation on Paweł's mother. While her son continues to walk to Częstochowa, Zofia comes back to the hospital. Meanwhile, Paweł is getting closer to his goal. He manages to keep Andrzej away from alcohol, but the miracle he hoped for does not occur. His mother dies during the operation. Nevertheless, he ends his pilgrimage and his faith in the Mother of God is not clouded by the misfortune. Andrzej and Paweł are back in their home village for the funeral. Paweł firmly believes in his mother's resurrection and Andrzej returns to alcohol. So that Paweł and Piotr do not end up in an orphanage, they take care of Andrzej and ask him to adopt them.
