Wudalianchi ( Chinese 五大连池市 , pinyin Wǔdàliánchí Shì ) is a Chinese county-level city in the province of Heilongjiang , which the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Heihe belongs. It has an area of 9,800 km². The volcanic area of Wudalianchi is recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, both because of the colonization of volcanic rock with pioneer plants and because of the traditional cultural and religious customs preserved there.
Surname
The name of the city means "Five-Lake-Plate" and refers to the interconnected lakes that were created after the eruption of the volcanoes Laohei (老黑山) and Huoshao (火烧 山) in 1720/21.
