Wulf Vater (born  November 27, 1917 in Opladen ; †  September 22, 2007 in Leverkusen ) was a German pharmacologist . From 1956 to 1980 he worked at the Pharmacological Institute of Bayer AG and during this time contributed significantly to the development of the drug nifedipine . In recognition of his achievements, he received, among other things, the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Schmiedeberg plaque .

Life

Wulf Vater was born in Opladen in 1917. From 1938 he studied medicine at the University of Cologne , which he completed in 1944 with the state examination and doctorate . He then worked at the Medical University Clinic in Cologne, and from 1956 he worked at the Pharmacological Institute of Bayer AG . His most important merit is the development of the drug nifedipine (Adalat), a calcium antagonist of the dihydropyridine type for the treatment of arterial hypertension and Raynaud's syndrome , which became one of Bayer AG's most successful drugs . In 1980 he retired. He died in Leverkusen in 2007 .

Awards

Wulf Vater, who supported medical research at the Technical University of Dresden through donations , received the Carl Gustav Carus Medal from its medical faculty in November 1997. The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , at which he founded a foundation named after him in 1996 for the promotion of pharmacological research, made him an honorary citizen in 1999. In the same year he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, and in 2002, together with Roman Muschaweck , the Schmiedeberg plaque , the highest honor awarded by the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology . Bayer AG awarded him the Otto Bayer Medal in 1988.
