X-Moto is a free open source -2D- Motocross - Computer game that for Linux , FreeBSD , macOS and Microsoft Windows is developed. The game was also ported for AmigaOS 4 and Sony PSP . Driving physics play an important role at X-Moto . The game principle is based on that of Elasto Mania , but has some differences. The game is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Due to the popularity of the game and the Inksmoto Level Editor, which is also available for all platforms, thousands of additional levels have been created by volunteers and made available on the game's website.

There is a public X-Moto server on tuxfamily.org. This allows the game to be played together with others over the Internet.

Gameplay

The goal of the game is to use a motocross to overcome a course with obstacles, loops, ledges, etc., collect strawberries and reach the flower at the end of the level. To do this, you use the controls to adjust the gas and brakes and lift or push the machine using the steering wheel. In order to hunt for records, you can also have the journey of the record displayed as a ghost alongside your own journey.

The game uses the Lua scripting language . The 2D physics engine Chipmunk is used for the physics calculation . Furthermore, the game is based on the Open Dynamics Engine , SDL and OpenGL .

The first official version 0.1.0 (alpha) was released on May 29, 2005, and since then the game has been continuously developed and improved. Since the alpha version 0.1.14, high scores and thus the course records can be downloaded via the game. Since alpha version 0.1.8, X-Moto, the game allows recording and playback of the races. The current version is 0.5.11 from March 29, 2014. The game has already been translated into over a dozen languages.

distribution

In addition to the Windows, Mac and FreeBSD version, the game is available for many common Linux distributions and can be installed and updated from the repositories . This option is available for Debian , openSUSE , Gentoo Linux and Foresight Linux , among others . For Fedora , X-Moto is included in the Games Spin . Current packages for the distributions Ubuntu , Slackware and openSUSE are available on the game's website . X-Moto is also in the PackMan archive for openSUSE. The game has been ported for AmigaOS 4 and Sony PSP.

The game was part of the c't software collection 6/2009 of the c't issue 24/2009 from the publisher Heinz Heise . Over 600,000 downloads have been recorded via various download portals : On Softonic there are 357,707 downloads for the Windows version and 70,390 downloads for the Mac version, on Chip Online 67,471 downloads for the Windows version since it was recorded on July 12, 2012 Computer Bild 54,351 downloads for the Windows version, 48,428 downloads for the Linux version on Softpedia and 8,134 downloads on netzwelt (as of January 16, 2013) .
