Xanthomonas translucens is a phytopathogenic bacterium that attacks grain and is responsible for black furiness (also known as bacterial streak disease).

description

The bacterium is Gram-negative and has the shape of aerobic, polar monotrich flagellated, singly or in pairs occurring rods with dimensions of 0.5-0.8 nm × 1.0-2.5 nm.

It is common all over the world. Mainly barley , rye , wheat and triticale are known as hosts . Infected leaves show stripes that are necrotic in the middle and rust-colored towards the edges. Bacterial mucus is secreted that dries into a thin, chalky coating. Symptoms appear 10 to 14 days after infection.

Systematics

The representatives of the genus Xanthomonas belong to the family Lysobacteraceae (formerly known as Xanthomonadaceae). The species Xanthomonas translucens was originally identified in 1917 by Jones et al. first described. This was later classified as the strain Xanthomonas campestris pv. Translucens . As part of a comprehensive DNA analysis of Xanthomonas campestris , various pathovars thereof were finally merged in a new species and the species Xanthomonas translucens was revived (Vauterin et al., 1995), which is now regarded as a genomic species.

Most of the strains of Xanthomonas translucens have been isolated from scientific samples rather than from commercial farming fields. It is believed that one reason for this could be that scientists who are familiar with bacterial problems make more precise observations in experiments.
