Tidal wave "Silver Dragon" in Hangzhou |
The Qiantang River ( Chinese 钱塘江 , Pinyin Qiántáng Jiāng ) is the most important river in the Chinese province of Zhejiang .
Before it flows into Hangzhou Bay and thus into the East China Sea, it flows through the provincial capital Hangzhou . Its upper course is known as Xin'an Jiang ( 新安江 ). The river was previously called Zhe Jiang ( 浙江 ) and is the namesake of the Zhejiang province of the same name .
It is 494 kilometers long and has a catchment area of 54,349 square kilometers. Large parts of the main course and some of the side courses are navigable. The water discharge is 1434 m³ / s.
In China, the river is known for its annual spring tide. The tide coming upstream from the bay into the narrower river leads to a tidal wave up to nine meters high . The "Silver Dragon", as the giant wave is called, attracts hundreds of thousands of onlookers every year to watch the natural spectacle. The tidal wave of the Qiantang River is considered to be the largest in the world.
