Xu Jialu

Xu Jialu ( Chinese  许嘉璐 , Pinyin Xǔ Jiālù ; born June 3, 1937 in Beijing ) is a politician , literary scholar and university professor in the People's Republic of China , who was among other things chairman of the Chinese Society for the Promotion of Democracy (CAPD) from 1997 to 2007 was Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress between 1998 and 2008 .

Life

Xu Jialu, a member of the Han Chinese from Huai'an in Jiangsu , began studying Chinese literature at the Beijing Pedagogical University after attending school in 1954 and graduated in 1959. He then became a lecturer and later professor of Chinese literature at the Beijing Pedagogical University and became one of the leading experts on the Five Classics . At times he was also Vice President of the Beijing Pedagogical University and President of the Chinese Society for the Exegetical Study of Classical Chinese Literature.

In 1987, Xu joined the Chinese Society for the Promotion of Democracy (CAPD), one of eight other approved political parties in the People's Republic of China alongside the Chinese Communist Party . In the following years he also began his political engagement and was a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress between 1988 and 1998 and in 1988 Vice-Chairman of the Beijing City Committee of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People . From 1994 to 1997 he was also the chairman of the State Working Committee on Language.

In 1997, Xu Jialu succeeded Lei Jieqiong as chairman of the Central Committee of the China Society for the Promotion of Democracy, and held that post until 2007, when Yan Junqi became the new chairman of the CAPD. In 1998 he also became vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and remained in this position until 2008. In 1999, he was also President of the Chinese Council for Promoting Peaceful Reunification and a member of the Preparatory Committee for the Surrender of Macau .

In addition to his activities as a university lecturer and politician, Xu published several non-fiction books.
