The spruce bark beetle ( Xylechinus pilosus ) is a weevil from the subfamily of the bark beetle (Scolytinae). Since it creates its breeding systems in the bark of the host trees, it is counted among the bark breeders.

features

The beetles are 2.2 to 2.5 millimeters long and have a dark brown body. The head is visible from above, the pronotum is hairy across the body, narrower than the wing covers, hardly constricted in front and finely and wrinkled dotted. The basal edge of the elytra is bent up with cusps and interrupted in the middle by the label . The elytra have clear rows of dots and between them are covered with fine scalloped hairs. They drop off steeply towards the end. The first space between the wing cover seam and the rows of dots is noticeably hairy. The second gap is at the fall with no thorns or bumps. The elongated antenna lobe has three curved seams, the antenna whip is five-part. The eyes are not kidney-shaped. The front hips are far apart, the third phalanx is heart-shaped and bilobed. The antennae and legs are reddish brown.

distribution

The species is distributed in central and northern Europe and in the east to the European part of Russia .

Way of life

Xylechinus pilosus occurs on Norway spruce ( Picea abies ) and Siberian spruce ( Picea obovata ), less often on pines ( Pinus ), firs ( Abies ), and larches ( Larix ). It colonizes the bark of trees and lives monogamous . To lay eggs, double-armed transverse passages are created, which are initially widened like a bunker . Up to 20 larval ducts can emerge from the mother ducts . The feeding pattern is variable. The interference is created irregularly.

There is only one generation a year, the flight time is in May and June. The beetles are not able to endanger extensive softwood stocks. Fighting is not necessary.
