Life

Yūzan Fujita was the eldest son of the former Sangiin President and Minister Fujita Masaaki . He graduated from Keiō University in 1972 and then worked for Mitsui Bussan . In 1982 he became his father's secretary. After his father withdrew from politics in 1989, he was elected to Sangiin in the 1989 Sangiin election for Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1993 he stepped down to run for governor. At the time of his election he was the youngest governor in the country. He was then re-elected three times. In June 2009 he announced that he would not run for a fifth term in the gubernatorial election on November 8, 2009. The election was won by Hidehiko Yuzaki .

Yūzan Fujita died on December 18, 2015 at the age of 66.

Positions on national politics

In 2002, Fujita welcomed the decision by the central government under Jun'ichirō Koizumi not to proceed in court against the obligation to pay medical aid to Hibakusha living abroad (especially in Korea) . As a result, although the payment formalities were reformed in 2003, the victims could still only receive support if they traveled to Japan.

In 2006, Fujita opposed the joint plans of the central government and the US military to move a US Air Force aircraft squadron from Atsugi to Iwakuni in neighboring Yamaguchi Prefecture .
